Artist Statement
My artwork can be described as intricate and vibrant. I utilize colors and paint in a manner reminiscent of impressionism and post-impressionism. I also appreciate using printmaking to explore various narrative and mark-making techniques.
In my art, I examine nostalgia, family, and the sense of being at ease. I capture those moments that go unnoticed or are difficult to remember because they happen so quickly. My goal in my work is to encapsulate those tiny seconds of life that solely aim to bring comfort to people. Nature is another source of inspiration for my artwork. By observing sunsets and the colors, they produce, I incorporate nature's own vibrant and muted color palettes into my own. Regarding my illustrations, I favor a vintage approach with a substantial amount of texture and hand-drawn quality. I've always been nostalgic, but I have also been nostalgic for a time I never experienced. Throughout life, I have grown close to family members and have fulfilled my longing for another life in past decades, such as the 80s, 70s, and 60s, through my relatives who have experienced those times. Therefore, I have used my art as a way to relate to different eras of time I have grown fond of, and by doing so, I hope to bring a sense of nostalgia to the viewer, no matter their age.
As a child, I admired my family members for their strong work ethic and felt honored to be one of them. Often my family members would tell me stories about their life accompanied by old, grainy photos. My grandfather owned multiple movie theaters and other businesses from the 60s to the 80s so that I would see pictures and old posters containing different fonts and designs for his advertisements and old movies. The work usually exhibited hand-drawn illustrations and could be classified as authentic retro designs. Growing up surrounded by vintage visual pieces, my mind was inspired. By using eras of time that brings me joy, I can escape from my own time and create a world with my art that is both bittersweet and satisfactory. In the past, I've dealt with loneliness and the depression that comes with it, and creating art was also my escape from that darkness. In the end, I hope that others will be able to use my art to inspire their own lives and find comfort in the knowledge that they are not alone in this world.
